Being a massive fan of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ and having studied it religiously at university, I can say that I thought Tim Burton’s take on the novel was awe inspiring. It is a brilliant film and is now one of my favourites. Johnny Depp is outstanding as the Mad Hatter: a tremendous actor who has outdone himself playing this character, truly wonderful!
The imagination of Tim Burton combined with that of Lewis Carroll has created a magnificent masterpiece. Genius work by all those involved!
I was genuinely sad that we all had to leave Wonderland at the end. Maybe there’s a space to be filled by a sequel? Oh I do hope so! Awesomely entertaining film!

Having seen this film in 3-D at the cinema, I simply had to buy the DVD.
I admit I am a Tim Burton fan, he just gets better and better.
Although I’m a Tim Burton fan I concede his films are probably an acquired taste.
As is usually the case if you like Tim Burton’s work you’ll love it, if you don’t you’ll probably hate it.

It’s a well made film that you will be happy to trade 108 minutes of your time for. If you take it seriously or try to read some deep meaning into though you will be bitterly disappointed.

When this film was released, and there was all the hoo-ha about it going to dvd within weeks, I was totally underwhelmed in the interest department. I’d read the Alice books, seen films and tv versions, so was pretty sure this film couldn’t add anything new.
How wrong I was!!
I ended up watching this on a plane trip as there was nothing else worth viewing. From the beginning I was mesmerised – by the characters and the colourful ‘scenery’. I loved (in fact, I’d like to adopt) The Tweedle Twins (Matt Lucas); Jonny Depp still manages to be gorgeous despite the madness and make-up; Steven Fry as the ubiquitous Cheshire Cat is divine; Alan Rickman’s blue caterpillar is lugubriously lovely; Mia Wasikowska is the perfect Alice, and so on. The only slightly jarring note for me was that Helena Bonham Carter seemed to have entirely based her character on ‘Queenie’ from Blackadder – I feel Helena’s a good enough actress to have devised her own characterisation of the the Queen of Hearts, however, she was brilliant nonetheless; and a star studded list of supporting characters gets an A+ from me too, including Anne Hathaway and Crispin Glover.
Well, virtually as soon as we landed, I had ordered the blue-ray disc, and I LOVE it. I’m sorry I didn’t see it in 3D, but the BD is such good quality that I don’t feel I’ve missed out too much, and the extra features, particularly the ‘making-of’ is fascinating, answering lots of ‘How did they DO that?” questions.
If you have managed to stick with me so far, you’ll probably have gathered by now that this has instantly become one of my all-time favourite films in the history of the world – ever! I have never been a fantasy film fan, but I’m more than happy to make an exception in this case. My 7 year-old grandaughter,12 year-old grandson, 57 year-old husband, and 77 year-old Mum all absolutely love it too – so a film for any age or gender – and we can’t ALL be wrong!!

I first saw this film at the cinema in 3D and did not really enjoy it, because the glasses seem to take something away. Now having seen the film in blu-ray I loved it and the amazing characters really added to the story. This is one any Tim Burton/ Johnny Depp fans will love. My favourite is the cheshire cat, I just love that grin. A film all the family will rave about.

Inspired by the novels, this film gives an alterative to the original story as it presents a grown up Alice, in conflict with the restrictions that Victorian society imposed on women. 19 year old Alice rebels against the suffocating norms of Victorian life and is unsure whether to marry a most desired by society’s standards, but unattractive Lord. She then finds herself lost in Wonderland and has to prove herself to be the right Alice as apparently she had been there before as a child and this is her second journey to Wonderland. And what a Wonderland it is! Tim Burton at his best has created a spectacular truly wonderful Wonderland with his usual dark, imaginative and gothic sense of humour and the excellent use of special effects.
What however differs this film from most 3D, extravagant displays of special effects is its humanity and its magic. The journey to the Wonderland is for Alice a journey of self discovery as she experiences adventures, overcomes obstacles, falls in love -that was a stretch but a good addition nonetheless- and finally changes her life.
The characters are very well developed and excellently cast; Anne Hathaway so sweet and funny as the White Queen and Helena Bonham Carter is adorable as the love struck, evil Red Queen, insecure about her appearance. Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter proves that talent and humour is an unbeatable combination. In the novels, Alice is a child and as such, she can perceive everything as a wonder without questioning whether it is logical and therefore real, this is a trait that children possess while grownups don’t. Therefore when I first show that the film was about a grown up Alice I was sceptical, but Mia Wasikowska is excellently cast as she displays this childish quality.
In total a very nice adaptation of Lewis Carrol’s novels Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass (Penguin Classics). This is a film one should keep, and that is why it is so great that this Combi Pack gives us both the DVD and the Blu-ray with its interesting extra special features, at such an affordable price.
