Despite the overwhelmingly negative reviews posted here I actually liked this movie. I saw the original version a few weeks ago and enjoyed it, despite it being pretty dated, and although this remake naturally lacks some of the heart of the original it was still good fun in a mindless sort of way. It probably helped that I watched it with reasonably low expectations but had heard that the CGI Kraken and The Medusa were good value. This was certainly true, and the film was very much in the vein of Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy [DVD] [1999] and spin-off The Scorpion King [DVD] [2002], albeit with less humour and the embarrassingly wooden presence of Sam Worthington as Perseus, an actor so lacking in nuance and personality that he makes Sylvester Stallone look versatile.
Ultimately this is simply a series of set-piece battles, but with some great actors such as Pete Postlethwaite and the unbelieveably gorgeous Gemma Arteton on board, it is far less of a mess than it could have been.

    i thought it was good!
it could have had more in it but as they have said they are making a trilogy then i can see why they made it shorter.
overall great CGI and good acting!

I liked this film and I’m surprised at how badly it’s getting trashed.

I may have been helped by the fact that I haven’t seen the original but I thought a lot of the scenes were enjoyable. It wasn’t perfect – they could have done with making it a little longer and adding in an extra 20 minutes or so at the start to set the scene and build the characters. But, overall I thought there was more to like about the film than dislike. I’ll be interested to see the next one if they do a trilogy.

First of all, may I thank those reviewers who issued the warning about the shoddy 3D version of this film. Having thus saved money and found the 2D film of more than acceptable quality, it is much easier to pass comment on the movie.

The best advice is to start by not comparing this film to the earlier version at all. Instead, try to think of this being a world in some other place or dimension. This adjustment made, it is quite an acceptable Swords and Sandals fantasy. Some of the effects work and some don’t eg, Pegasus looks good, while medusa just hurtles about and lacks the subtle menance the watcher is led to expect during the adventure.

The film does slacken it’s pace in parts, while in others it begins to seem as if the quest is going somewhere, but there is real dead hand on the film. No, not the skeletal boatman on the River Styx, but the actor Sam Worthington in the lead role. How could the Producers think that an actor could be asked to go from being a poor fisherman, to a hero and then a God without having to act? Not a great movie then, but I will wait until the price comes down on the DVD and add a copy to my collection.

I wanted to go see Iron Man 2, but the times didn’t suit, so we reluctantly went to our local small cinema showing this on 29/5.

    It was fab !

Mads Mikkelsen was great, as were the cast & characters generally.

Way better than the original, & it seems the added 3D let it down on it’s cinema release. We saw it in 2D and thouroughly enjoyed it.

Recommeded to all fans of this genre. I’ll buy the DVD when released as it will certainly stand a second veiwing =o)

I am 11 and have never seen the original clash. I saw this at the cinema in 2D and it was brilliant! The special effects are excellent, the actors are superb (except maybe Sam Worthington) and the story is fantastic! Of course, some people may disagree because of the fact that they saw the original first and didn’t think that this one lived up to it’s predecessor’s –ahem– standards.

You can also say hello to a couple of old friends like Pegasus, the winged horse, the giant scorpions, Medusa, Hades and of course the incredibly computer animated Kraken! Mads Mikkelsen has a moving last moment in the film (no spoiler intended) and Gemma Arterton’s performance as Io is very impressive (I look forward to Prince of Persia) and the perfect parts were chosen to play Zeus and Hades. This was, respectivly, Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes.

Finally the protagonist. This was the only flimsy bit. Sam Worthington is… I don’t want to say rubbish but probably wasn’t as good as the original Perseus. This is only a guess seeing as I haven’t actually seen the original. Sam Worthington was OK but I don’t think he would ever win best actor at the oscars. I was going to give this a four star but seeing as all the other actors are great I added on an extra star.

I went to the odeon twice to see this and cant wait for the blu ray. i dont know how anyone can say its no good its amazing and 100 times better then the old one. just coz there old dont always make them classics. also the 3d version was out of this world. hades and the smoke in 3d was just amazing and the huge scorpions etc just wicked would give it a 10 if there was that option.

    roll on dvd/blu ray combi…….

This film was very entertaining, clever and a real rollercoaster of an action film. It has some masterful set-pieces; an epic fight between our heroes and some ENORMOUS scorpions and a battle with Medusa deep in her lair were probably the best, but there were loads of others so it’s hard to choose. It’s easy to criticise a film like this if you’re looking for a subtle, cerebral masterpiece whilst watching an up-to-date, technologically sophisticated, fast-paced action film. As the latter go, I don’t think this film put a foot wrong. Additionally, it contains some subtle humor and irony for those willing to listen. Louis Leterrier directed this film. He has also directed the Incredible Hulk and Transporter 3 (both improvements on their predecessors), so he has form. If you like action-adventure films then buy this film – you’ll love it. Or don’t, and go to bed early (by yourself). M.
