The film could only have been directed by Quentin Tarantino. It is a cleverly put together plot about Nazi atrocities and a gang of behind-the-lines US Nazi hunters lead by Brad Pitt, the eponymous ‘Inglourious Basterds’, set in occupied France from 1941 to 1944. Christoph Waltz steals the film with an excellent performance as the charming, urbane and psychopathic Nazi Colonel Hans Landa. It combines the usual anarchic scenes, witty dialogue and over-the-top action and violence one has come to expect from Tarantino. The cinema scene involving Brad Pitt posing as an Italian film director trying to speak Italian in a dreadful American accent with the fluent Col. Landa is a particular highspot. A clever and well put together story, but realistically probably only for those who enjoy the usual Tarantino mayhem.

The first glimpse of this compelling dark and twisted comedy has to be the most brilliantly written and directed opening scene that I have witnessed in ages. It is picturesque, yet soon becomes gripped with the terrifying presence of one of the best tongue and cheek characterizations of evil, embodied in the actor Christoph Waltz. It all appears belyingly hunky-dory, but the camera tells another story as the audience soon realizes that the modest French farmer is miraculously keeping a cool exterior in a most life-threatening situation.This marvelous stroke of celluloid story-telling sets the stage for a non-historical saga with an incredibly satisfying revenge toting finale.Tarantino stands alone as the filmaker who makes us cringe and laugh simultaneously, his characters are always ones that could be occupying the slick pages of graphic novels; quirky, campy,obsessively violent and always- over the top. With a very unpredicatable plot,Basterds is an extravaganza of characterizations, many brought to life from unfamiliar faces including: Til Schweiger, Michael Fassbender and the disarming,Melanie Laurent. I will of course be adding this masterpiece to my other treasured Tarantino yarns-Basterds -a stroke of genius!

OK. This is not a history lesson, it’s entertainment and personally, I don’t really like real characters being dropped into fictional situations but every film has to be set at some point and place in history so why not World War II with Adolf and his mob?
I’ll admit to being a Tarantino fan although I thought ‘Death Proof’ was a turnip and it’s almost like Tarantino has become a caricature of himself but this film is brilliant, I won’t have a word said against it and as far as the reviewers who have given it 1 star, maybe zey vanted ze Nazi’s to vin mein fuhrer!

I avoided seeing this film because, although I loved all of Quentin’s other films, one about the war didn’t appeal. When I finally watched it, I loved it. The guy who won best supporting actor thoroughly deserved the oscar. He was fantastically evil, especially in Chapter one at the dairy farm. Not to be missed !

Classic Tarantino. If you like Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill etc you’ll like it, if you don’t you won’t. Brad Pitt is excellent.

Another good deal from Amazon. The items are clearly displayed with price, delivery etc, and they are delivered when they tell you. That is another good thing.

Firstly I should point out that I am not a Tarantino fan, I find a lot of his films boring or just childish. To date the only films that have really stood out for me have been ‘Pulp Fiction’ and ‘Death Proof’. I thought I would give this film a go, and wow! was I glad I did. In the years to come this will probably be touted as his best movie, as I can’t see how he can better this. It has to be admitted that Tarantino does have a way with words and scenes, making you laugh when you shouldn’t really.

This film is set in the second world war and we are first introduced to Colonel Hans Landa, who in Occupied France has an uncanny sense when it comes to hunting out Jews. When he finds a family being hidden by a French farmer he orders their execution, but the eldest girl of the family manages to escape.

At the same time the Americans have placed a team of mis-fits into the country, made up of Jews and disaffected persons. Their mission is to hamper the Germans and spread fear, by scalping the enemy.

With a story that includes Allied efforts and the efforts of Shosanna the escaped Jewish girl to kill the German military leaders things eventually come to a grand finale at a Paris cinema. Neither side are aware of the others efforts to kill and cause mayhem.

Brad Pitt is good as Lieutenant Aldo Raine, and Shosanna, played by the beautiful Melanie Laurant is great, but Christoph Waltz as Landa steals the film with an excellant performance that is mad, scary and humourous.

Be warned though that this film is shot in English, German and French languages, with a little bit of Italian, and so there are subtitles popping up throughout, also some of these subtitles aren’t correct – you shouldn’t really put up things like oui and merci, they should have been done properly as yes and thank you. The whole story is slightly surreal, darkly funny and entertaining, so despite its length the time flies by. There is violence in this film but considering that it is a war movie there is surprisingly less than you could expect, so at least Tarantino has learnt that you need a lot more than blood to make something truly great. Also included on this dvd is the film ‘Nation’s Pride’, which is the movie that the Germans are watching at the cinema.

All in all then this is great quirky movie that should appeal to a large audience, and is well worth watching.

Once again, Tarantino proves why he is one of the most exciting filmmakers of the last 20 years. His movies are usually a mix of originality and revisitation of cinematic History, and Inglourious Basterds is such an exercise. You get a war pic without real war scenes, but with lots of amazing dialogues (in four different languages), suspense and set pieces. The performances are all stellar (with a multinationallity cast) and visually, it’s an amazing movie, with the high def quality making entire justice to cinematographer Robert Richardson’s amazing work. The best movie of 2009, and a must buy for any QT fan.

From the dialogs to the camera shots, everything is so perfectly realised these 2 hours of film seems way too short.

Tarantino revisit history in his own style giving the feeling that his movies happends in another dimension where thugs can debates hours about vintage pop music and where hot chicks drives 70′s collection car.

Inglorious Basterds is Tarantino’s most enjoyable film in quite some time. The first hour is a gently paced build up for a pretty relentless assault in the second half of the film. Brad Pitt is excellent as Aldo Raine and Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa “The Jew Hunter” is a great adversary.
The film is split into five chapters, the first of which is one long opening scene which builds tension extremely well. Much of the film has subtitles but it’s Tarantino’s excellent use of different languages that adds to much of the tension. There are times when you know that some characters are unable to tell what others are saying because they don’t speak the language. It adds to the suspense.
Part of what makes the film so much fun is that QT has decided to throw away much of the history of WW2 and recreate it his own way for fun, without being in any way disrespectful.
The blu-ray picture and sound are excellent and there are some great special features, including a very interesting “round the table” chat with Pitt and Tarantino.
Never has the phrase “Bon Giorno” been better used!
