    It’s Monty Python. It’s the funniest, most important and exciting sketch show ever.

    Ignore the much lauded sketches that people who don’t really like Python bang on about (i.e) Parrot Sketch and instead enjoy gems such as The Ideal Loon Exhibition, Confuse-A-Cat, The Bols Story, Njorl’s Saga, Climbing the North face of the Uxbridge Road, Prejudice, It’s The Mind, Argument Sketch and Rival Documentaries.

    And let’s not forget some of Gilliam’s truly off the wall animations, “I confess” and “the men escaping from ‘the society for putting things on top of other things’ meeting” are two that spring to mind.

    A true masterclass in comedy writing and performing. Awesome.

    Every penny well spent. The humor of the team of Monty Python is timeless and just as funny as when I saw it first all those years ago.
    And the best part is: they get better as the seasons progress!

    I cannot recommend this box highly enough. Anyone with a sense of humour, nay anyone with a detectable pulse, should own this marvellous box. The picture and sound quality is excellent given the age of the material, and while the extras are – per force – limited, it is still an excellent package.
    Today, 40 years after the first shows, it is hard to imagine what it must have been like when this gang of mad-men first appeared on the BBC. I don’t think the viewers had any idea what had hit them. And while some of the cultural references are lost 4 decades down the line (most people will mercifully have forgotten just how dull TV otherwise was in those days!), the sheer quality of the comedy still shines through. The “Dead Parrot” knows no age. Buy this box and enjoy it – preferably together with someone new to Monty Python – as we have done with our teenaged children.

    Monty Python? Total Genius. If you care at all about TV (comedy or otherwise) or just popular culture in general then you have to own this. Particularly at such a knock down price, it really is worth it. It’s fantastically funny stuff and having the whole 4 series in one box is very convenient so you don’t have to waste time finding the right DVD when you could be busy laughing your head off. I should mention however,that the box is rather flimsy so I would recommend extra care when transporting it around, particularly if you’re not normally the meticulous type.

    It may have dated a little (1969-1974) and may look rather rough at the edges but at its peak these TV series contained some of the most intelliegnt humour around, more so than the better known films by the Pythons. The jokes work on so many levels, and it mocks so many things that even today seem quite relavent, including police stupidity, beurocracy and even bankers! A must for any comedy lover as long as you don’t quote the lines to your friends. 4th series is a bit tiresome, but the other 3 particulatly are worth multiple viewing in some cases. Ceratinly in the UK it is difficult to see any of these programmes repeated on TV, so this good value boix set is the answer.

    I grew up watching Python on PBS Television in California. Some of the skits have become so embedded in my consciousness that I use references to it not remembering where they originated. This set is fantastic because it’s got all the shows, all the famous sketches and the infamous ones. I can’t explain why it makes me laugh so much but it still does. I have rediscovered the origins of those catch phrases and now understand why I can’t say ‘Barnsley’ in a normal way. It was an extra bonus to watch Terry Jones running along the road in Ealing Broadway carrying Carol Cleveland dressed as a bride on their way to buy a bed. I now live in Ealing so figure the circle is complete – from being an eight year old Californian doing bad impressions for my friends gleaned from late night viewings of Python, to actually walking the same streets used to create such loveable silliness. Buy this set. It’s a great collection and an unbeatable price!

    When I saw some of the Monty Phython clips I was eager to see more. When I found out there was a collection of all the Flying Circus episodes for a resonable price I was quick to add it to my birthday list. When I first got the set I watched one episode and then watched the rest in quick succesion. Needless to say I was very pleased with the product. It’s zany humor was highly entertaining and it also included interesting special features. I also advise the Monty Phython films which are also very funny. It’s very good value for money and it is entertaining for everyone. I’m pleased to be able to give this product 5 stars.

    The ultimate masterpiece of what a silly wild bunch of six genius could ever have done (with “The Holly Grail”, of coconut-riding course !) They’re more complete MPFC boxsets but this one choose to concentrate on the essential : the original BBC sketches. For passionate lovers of dead parrots, dead Indians, dead dentists, dead Mary Queen of Scots… See it and die laughing with the happiest expression on your face. Simply the funniest jokeset in the world !
    Includes very finely made documentaries about the pre-MP era with cross-biographies of its members, the unbelievable acclaim this 100% british and excentric troupe receive in America, defeating all predictions and the commented making of animated opening sequences by Gilliam himself.
    If I may add a personal recommandation, read right away the wonderful “The Pythons’ Autobiography By The Pythons” published by Orion Books.

    I cannot express the joy with which I opened this box set, a veritable chest of treasure. 45 shows of Monty Python’s Flying Circus. While some are undoubtedly better than others, every episode has at least one genius moment that makes it worth your while. Contrary to popular belief I’m not convinced that the quality of the shows really decreased as series 3 and 4 went along. These two series contain some of my absolute favourite material. Right up until the end of series 4 episode 6 is some of the greatest comedy material ever written. The batsmen of the Kalahari is a particular favourite of mine, and a great way to end the final episode of the final series of the greatest comedy show in the whole history of comedy shows.

    Concerning this box set, I was very happy with the whole package. The fold out digipack is compact, but the discs can be a little tricky to get out and put back. I’ve got the hang of it now, but it took me a while! One little thing I wish the set came with some sort of booklet listing the episodes, and on which discs they appear. The discs themselves are great, the menus are most enjoyable (much more than the Holy Grail dvd menu which just goes on a bit too long) giving little snippets of some of the greatest sketches. As others have said, a Play All feature would be handy, but to be honest I haven’t missed it. And I’ve also found that you only get the copyright warning on the first episode that you play off the particular disc. If you play another episode while the disc is still inserted you jump straight in.

    I don’t know how to recommend this heartily enough…let’s try: If it was between this and a million quid, this would probably make you happier!!

    I’ve always thought this was THE funniest show ever written It’s good to see other people feel the same.
    Yes it’s a shame that some of the sketches have been cut, but I’m just glad it’s out on DVD.
    The Summarize Proust sketch was censored by the BBC way back in the 70′s, they (the BBC) didn’t mind the strangling animals comment, it was the self abuse reference they censored.(A strange set of priorities!)
    The Python member that will catch the eye initially, is obviously, John Cleese and even though he is a funny man don’t let his physical presence over shadow the others.
    Michael Palin in particular with his funny little asides and expressions, is in my humble opinion, the funniest Python.
    ~~~~
    The show ran from BBC 2 :~1969-1974.
    45 episodes (30 minutes.)
    John Cleese left after season 3 to start writing, “Fawlty Towers”
    with his wife at the time Connie Booth.
    And don’t overlook Palin’s and Jones’es, “Ripping Yarns”.
    But where on Earth is Eric Idle’s, “Rutland Weekend Television” ?
    Happy viewing; “But for heavens sake keep an eye out for Spiny Norman.”
