I am a huge fan of Ridley Scott and give this film 5 stars partly to offset the morons who give it 1. In truth its 4.5 stars but I feel hopefully the directors cut will add enough footage that I feel is missing to make it a 5 star classic as he did the Kingdom of Heaven DC. What I love about the film is the telling of how a Robin Hood (hero of historical myth) could have come about. As usual the direction, script, acting, editing, cinematography, costume, set design are flawless. But there is I feel a flatness about the middle section.
I find no problem with Russell Crowe in his mid 40′s being Robin and his chemistry with Cate Blanchett is perfect, she gives a great performance as does most of the cast. His Robin is not the young swashbuckler but a moral, troubled man who has had enough of war. The immersion into the 13th century is brilliantly realised, Ridley Scott has no peer in transporting you to the world depicted.
Despite being a 12a it is an adult film with subtle cgi and after the overblown hype and sloppy filmaking of Avatar Iron Man et all its nice to see old style producing the goods, it is also the best Robin Hood film yet made, that says it all.
Another great film by one of the greatest directors of all time.

I have just been to see this movie with friends, and i can quite safely say that it is the best movie this year. I have been studying the Robin Hood legend for about 16 years now, and Ridley scotts’s Robin hood has to be the most visually stunning and original Robin Hood movie that i have ever seen!. The sets and acting are superb and true to form Russell Crowe gives a solid performance as the Hooded man himself!, Russell even tries really hard with the english accent, and while some may be quick to discredit him for this i feel he did a pretty good job of the accent, and credit to him for trying so hard with it. The movie seems to be set up for a sequel, and if the Film makers decide to make a sequel which will explore more into Robin Hood’s life as an outlaw i will welcome it with both open arms and mind!. I love the movie Robin Hood: prince of thieves, but Mr Scott’s and Mr Crowe’s Robin hood has now easily become my favourite Robin Hood movie of all time! and i cannot wait to get it on dvd!.

robin hood prince of thieves was a flawed but fun film. kevin costner’s mullett and californian accent, the fact that nottingham seems to be 10 minutes away from dover, that bryan adams song, alan rickman’s brilliant sherriff, errol flynn’s adventures of robin hood is an all time classic, and disney made a great animated version with a fox as robin hood. yes, these are some of the best versions of the legend, and ridley scott’s brilliant new take on a very old and fammiliar story is in my opinion one of the very best yet. this isn’t quite the same story yet, this is more of a prequel, an origin story. robin hood begins if you like. this shows what is likely to have happened if robin hood ever existed. all the familliar characters are there, robin, little john, the sherriff, maid marion, though not as you probably remember them. this is a brilliantly made film with some amazing battle scenes and great performances from the entire cast. russell crowe’s english accent keeps slipping into irish for some reason, but apart from that he makes a superb robin hood. the film is like a cross between gladiator and kingdom of heaven, one of ridley scott’s more underrated films, especially if you’ve seen the magnificent director’s cut. very highly reccommended, this is epic film making at it’s very best. can’t wait for the inevitable robin hood 2!

The film is not only dealing with Robin Hood, the famous and mysterious character of English history and the Forest of Sherwood. It is a lot more, a film on the tricky period when Richard Lionheart coming back from his crusade is killed in a battle in France. This time when John Lackland is taking over and has to face the attempt to invade England performed by the French king Philip II Augustus. The invasion was prepared by a treacherous friend of King John who tried to use his friendship to serve the interests of the French king. He submitted the northern part of the country to heavy taxes and a lot of violence that caused their rebellion against the king, which should have enabled the French fleet to disembark and conquer London. The film is essentially an adventure film but it is also based on history and it respects that history. The way the King manipulates the rebellious barons to get their help in time to defeat the French on his own beaches is the perfect case of a liar that uses the belief in divine kings of the time only to seize more power and deprive others from any small piece of it. We know it will take fifteen to sixteen years for an alliance to be built between the barons, the church and the merchants of the City of London to force that king John to come to Runnymede and accept to sign the Magna Carta that will change the world, that represents the first step of that vast historical change that we call democracy. Fifteen small years in the heart of feudalism to achieve that phenomenal transformation. And that Magna Carta is so small when measured with our own values that we are amazed by the infinitely small in history. Robin Hood, who is not yet Robin Hood, since the film ends when Robin Longstride is outlawed by John Lackland, is thus only one small man among these men, and women, who made history then, or started to make history, though it seems fairer to say that they were those who finally brought England in the wake of the slowly moving boat of history. This action film only becomes that historical film I am speaking of if you know all these details of English history. Otherwise it will remain an action film. Ridley Scott just did a good film in both directions.

Ridley Scott films always repay multiple viewing, which I am more than happy to do.I found this film a brilliant example of epic film-making, not relying on 3D or CGI Beautifully filmed, funny, and excellent acting as would be expected and some very tender grown-up moments. Yes I have seen Errol Flynn I think that film benefits from the rose-tinted views of nostalgia. The Kevin Costner film had a top of the pops song to boost it, together with Alan Rickmans over the top Sheriff.

Can I begin by saying that there is absolutely no reason to compare this with the schmaltzy Kevin Costner movie Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves [1991] [DVD]. The two are light years apart, and as you’d expect from a Ridley Scott film this is far grittier and miles more atmospheric, although it is far from po-faced and is actually quite lighthearted in places.
Russell Crowe is predictably one-dimensional in his portrayal of Robin Longstride, archer to Richard the Lionheart, who finds himself taking on another identity in order to spare an old man’s (a superb Max Von Sydow) pride. Thus we have an alternative idea of how the Robin Hood myth came about, and on the whole it’s a good, pacy action-oriented romp.
Mark Strong excels as evil henchman to King John – the scar-faced Godfrey, whilst Mark Addy (despite a fast-growing resemblance to the late Terry Scott) was born to play the less than pious Friar Tuck. Cate Blanchett makes a fine feisty Marian, and the actors playing the other outlaws all slot in nicely. Overall this is a decent enough addition to the ever-growing canon of Robin Hood adaptations, and with Scott’s masterly handling Crowe isn’t at all bad as the titular outlaw.

I have seen this film 15 times in the cinema, I loved it and yet this, unfortunately is spoilt by the edits made. The editor needs to be shot, I lost count of the continuity errors and poor editing, some of the shots used are awfull (when godfrey stands over robin locksley, check out how many times his hands move on the stake!) also ( when russell crow rides into the village and tells the french stop or its death, points his sword, marion sees walters body and then russell crow says we have two days! how’d he work that out??!)
Still The score is beautiful and carried the joys and emotions just as the gladiator one did, but if not better.
Yes, the accents are a bit .. hazy in places, but I understood them and they probably could be better, but don;t forget, its only a film! The story is great and after the first showing I knew this wa terribly edited and this was demanding a directors cut, I hope to see at least 20-40 minutes restored as the editor wa a prat for cutting what he did, the film really suffered for this. This movie is an epic and should have stayed about the 3 hour mark.
The support cast are excellent as in prince of theives the meery men are great. Mark Strong is the best villan of the decade, what a CV he’s amassing.
Sets are excellent and this film does give you that adrenal fueled gladiator vibe. I belive this is the best movie Scott has done since galdiator and Alien before that, and this is THE movie of 2010.

I know this film has had a bit of a slating by some people but I enjoyed it. I didn’t take it too literally or compare it to Errol Flynn of Kevin Costner versions or the reality of history, I booked my ticket, got my popcorn and sat down to watch a film.
One thing I did find a little strange was the accent(s) that came from Russell Crowe. It has been explained by some that because he was involved in the Crusades and travelled and met many different people, he picked up varying accents. What rubbish, I travelled for 25 years all around the world and don’t have varying accents. If you move from America to England and stayed for a number of years you would pick up an accent but not many.
Anyway back to the story, it works well. The film commences with Robin fighting in foreign lands in the crusades. In order to escape back to England, he takes on the identity of a Knight and with his Bowmen returns to England but being pursued by a tretcherous Englishman who is vying his bets with the French.
Robin returns to Locksley where he continues his fraud and winning the over the dead Knights wife and father, he fully adopts his identity in order that the King and Sheriff do not take his ‘fathers land.’
What follows is the first chapter in a trilogy of films that ends with Robin and his gang plus Marion, escaping to the woods of Sherwood Forrest to live and survive and stay out of the hands of the Sherrif of Nottingham.
If you forget what’s gone before and watch this as a stand alone film, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it like I did. Hopefully it wont be too long before the sequel is made!

I think perhaps anyone looking for the classic light hearted robin hood films will be disappointed in this version.
Most legends as based on real life events, altered and improved upon per telling for entertainment or preference until they become the well known stories to all. This version tries to be realistic, is Robin Hood ever did exist, his life was most likely like this.
I’m starting to make it sound like some sort of documentary now aren’t I? I assure you that is not the case. The film tells the story of how a man became Robin Hood. It is packed with everything a good film requires; there is a wonderful plot, imperfect villains and heroes, some action and violence, some love and loyalty, parts that make your heart bleed and parts that make you chuckle out loud.
I would recommend seeing this film highly, an unique, fresh version of a well loved legend.
