just such a brilliant film — one of the best around, holmes reminds me of a bit like captain sparrow (depp)in pirates of the carribean — great stuff !!

This is the first time I’ve seen a truly credible Sherlock Holmes film and the more you watch the more you see – really clever, beautifully filmed and acted. Downey is superb and you will love his Sherlock; hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for a sequel!

Saw this in the cinema and thought it was great so bought the DVD and it was just as good the second time around! Robert Downey Jr is the perfect Sherlick Holmes for a Guy Ritchie film. Alot of Ironman character similarities with the odd bit of humour thrown in as happens in most Ritchie films.

This came in plenty of time for Father’s Day, good value for money especially as it also had the digital copy included in the price!

Can we hear it for the under-rated Guy Ritchie? Rather like ABBA in the 1970′s, it’s been embarrassing and pretty ‘uncool’ for ‘serious’ film fans to admit that Ritchie is a hugely skilled and witty movie maker. Ritchie, London, Sherlock Holmes, Robert Downey Jr + a big Hollywood budget – what’s not to like? Cheer yourself up and see this film. Modern, sharp, witty, fast moving – Victorian London meets James Bond. Superb set design; incredible photography, great script and fab central performances; unpretentious too. Everyone obviously had a complete gas making it and it shows. Good old fashioned movie entertainment. Ritchie is re-established and Holmes reinvented as a terrific modern anti-hero.

Now this really is a new take on Sherlock Holmes, and is completely different from, for example, the Jeremy Bret characterisation. The plot is clever and devious; the dialogue fast and witty, and the acting convincing. I certainly thoroughly enjoyed this DVD. I thought the recreation of London in the 1895s was particularly good, and greatly added to the atmosphere of the whole presentation. If you are looking for a different version of SH, then give this some consideration – I hope there will be a sequel that is equally interesting.

To me this is the best holmes yet, the storyline, scenes, and the way it is done is second to none.
A brillant film!!!!!

Just a pointer to the amazing quality of the acting in Sherlock Holmes, when I first watched this I didn’t realise that Holmes was played by an American (well done on a very convincing accent Downey Jr). I wish I could have seen it twice because this film is so full of banter, actions and beautifully pitched characters that you couldn’t possibly catch everything on the first viewing.
Ok, so it’s not the traditional image of the famous pair, but having now read the books I can see just how true this film is to the original stories. It jumps between action, the serious and the comedy and has something that everyone can enjoy. There are so many quotes from the books and Holmes and Watson’s relationship is played out perfectly by Downey Jr and Law. It might not be your grandparent’s idea of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson but it’s a fresh view and it’s certainly worth the watch, this new action-hero Holmes appealed to both me and my parents. What can I say? Roll on the next one!

I bought this DVD with no preconceptions as to how good or bad it was going to be, but what a surprise I had… A real gem although maybe not for the Sherlock Holmes purists(Think Indiana Jones Based in Victorian London).The special affects are nothing short of stunning and a real feast for the eyes….. Robert Downey Junior steals the show in what I can only call a highly original take on the main character in this fast moving and entertaining adaptation, Although Jude Law (not one of my favorite actors) also performs his socks off, the ending leaves open the possibility of a sequel, which if true would certainly be on my shopping list…. I cannot praise this film highly enough …..a rollicking adventure from start to finish …Sherlock for the 21st century, well done Guy Ritchie……..

What a great film this is! I was hugely surprised at how good it is when I first saw it. I have always loved Sherlock Holmes and was unsure whether this would be true to the classics.

Well, as far as I am concerned, this IS the classic Holmes movie. I loved the way the relationship with Watson was portrayed, and the Victorian London imagery was a pleasure to behold. The story unfolds with magnificant charm, as mysteries unravel before our eyes, and seemingly innocuous observations become crucial to the game. There is plenty of action, some of which is portrayed almost in bullet time, with Holmes’ thought processes being narrated before the actual event. It works really well.

I can’t really say more without giving away spoilers. And I hate spoilers.

There must be more Holmes films made with this new cast. Not to do so would be a crime.

Incidently if you are a fan of the TV series House, you may watch this movie and see some similarities between House – Wilson and Holmes – Watson. As House was based on Holmes this is hardly a surprise!
