Product Description

After the visual bombast of many contemporary CGI and motion-capture features, the drawn characters in The Princess and the Frog, Walt Disney Studio's eagerly awaited return to traditional animation, feel doubly welcome. Directed by John Musker and Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin), The Princess and the Frog moves the classic fairy tale to a snazzy version of 1920s New Orleans. Tiana (voice by Anika Noni Rose), the first African-American Disney heroine, is not a princess, but a young woman who hopes to fulfill her father's dream of opening a restaurant to serve food that will bring together people from all walks of life. Tiana may wish upon a star, but she believes that hard work is the way to fulfill your aspirations. Her dedication clashes with the cheerful idleness of the visiting prince Naveen (Bruno Campos). A voodoo spell cast by Dr. Facilier (Keith David) in a showstopping number by composer Randy Newman initiates the events that will bring the mismatched hero and heroine together. However, the animation of three supporting characters--Louis (Michael-Leon Wooley), a jazz-playing alligator; Ray (Jim Cummings), a Cajun firefly; and 197-year-old voodoo priestess Mama Odie (Jenifer Lewis)--is so outstanding, it nearly steals the film. Alternately funny, touching, and dramatic, The Princess and the Frog is an all-too-rare example of a movie a family can enjoy together, with the most and least sophisticated members appreciating different elements. The film is also a welcome sign that the beleaguered Disney Feature Animation Studio has turned away from such disasters as Home on the Range, Chicken Little, and Meet the Robinsons and is once again moving in the right direction. --Charles Solomon Stills from Princess and the Frog (Click for larger image)

I thought this film was excellent and had been looking forward to taking my three and a half year old for weeks! Visually, the film was ‘old school’ animation but included some psychadelic sequences which were impressive. The voodoo character and the spirits he conjours are spooky and my daughter was a bit scared of them but not enough for me to be worried – and they weren’t in the film that much.

The princess character was in frog form for the majority of the film which led to my daughter asking on several occasions when she was going to be human again, but it was kind of the point of the film – looks aren’t everything.

The supporting characters were brilliant – Charlotte the spoilt but sweet rich girl, Louis the jazz-loving alligator and Ray the lovesick firefly. I particularly loved Mama Odie who wasn’t in it enough for me. There were several laugh-out-loud moments and it was quite fast-paced so neither of us got restless.

It was good to see a black lead character (even though she was actually green for most of the film) and great to have a princess who’s feisty and independent rather than a victim waiting to be rescued – a much better role model for young girls, I think. Overall it was a fantastic film and I can’t wait for it to come out on DVD.

Now normally i wouldent spend time writting reviews however on this particular occasion i noticed a couple of people slate it a bit which disapointed me somewhat, not that people are not entitiled to their opinion. I am a 23 year old male with a 3 year old daughter i have been brought up with disney and have always been a bigger fan of the hand drawn animation rather then cgi personally i think we have seen a bit too much cgi and i was glad to see disney return. I went to see this and i thought it was utterly brilaint as did my 3 year old, the animation was beautifull typical of disney and had the same charm as aladin, little mermaid ect. The songs were fabulous and both me and my daughter couldent stop singing. Now dont get be wrong its no were near some of the other disney animated classics but its still up there and i think personally this movie will stand the test of time for generations to come. All i can say is role on Dsneys Rapunzel November 2010

I have just returned from the cinema with my two children, aged 12 and 9 after seeing this film. I was not expecting to be bowled over as it was just an excuse to get them out over half term but I have to confess we all loved it. My 9 year old (who is autistic and therefore young for his age) was swaying to the jazz music and, thankfully, most of the Voodoo theme went over his head. My 12 year old who came on sufference absolutely loved it, as did I. It was a visual and musical treat. We were all swept away and the 97 mins or so flew by.

It was nice that Disney used no ‘famous’ voices as that game of ‘guess the voice’ tends to detract from the film. However, the voices were all great, especially the Prince who was very funny to start with but who managed to inject real pathos as the film progressed. The characters were all well drawn but I have to confess that the little firefly stole the film for me. He was funny, sad and full of hope all at the same time.

It has to be mentioned that the theme of the film was very dark indeed and some scenes may scare children under 5 but I believe kids like their characters to be in a bit of peril. It makes it all the more satisfying when they triumph over adversity. The ending was a little bit predictable but then, it wouldn’t be Disney otherwise.

It a nutshell it captures all the look, feel and content that made Disney great. These films are aimed at children and let them be the judge. My children loved this film.

Wow. That’s one word to sum up everything about this movie: Wow.

Since Emperor’s New Groove, Disney slowly went downhill until it was nothing but low-quality crappy sequels and badly made CGI movies, not to mention nothing but teenybopper shows on the Disney Channel. As for Toon Disney, I think the people working there confused themselves with Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon; something that is not their style.

However, Michael Eisner got fired and Robert Iger took his place as CEO of the Disney company, promising to get Disney back to the way it was supposed to be. Since then, I noticed improvements with movies like Enchanted and Bolt, but not to the point where everything was good again all of a sudden. I guess Eisner had some projects already set in motion that couldn’t be stopped. But that was all right, because movies were the most important, and they would eventually get everything right.

With The Princess in the Frog, what a movie to start another era out of the second Dark Age! This movie has EVERYTHING: great story, superb animation, great humor, excellent acting and singing, thought-provoking lessons to learn throughout the movie, the list goes on and on. I think it truly deserves its place as a true Disney classic. To top it all off, the newest Disney Princess, Tiana, has spunk, intelligence, and determinations. She is a great example for kids to look up to. She just needs to learn to relax once in a while, which Naveen teaches her. In return she teaches him that life isn’t all parties and women.

Movies like this make me realize that I can’t wait for Disney to come out with greater stuff in the future, like Rapunzel in 2010. I am really curious for the stuff they will do in the future. They have already done so much, but there’s so much out there that they haven’t done yet. It’s also interesting to see them write original movies like they did with Lady and the Tramp, Enchanted, and Bolt. This movie definitely deserves 5 stars; it was that good. I totally recommend it for anyone.

Disney have truly proven that they can still make a good film, most of their recent films were ok but not since the days of Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin have they made anything that stood out from the crowd.

There are so many animated films being churned out now and many seem to focus on effects particularly CGI and 3D to attract audiences but “The princess and the frog” shows that all you need is a good story, catchy songs and likeable characters , though I have to say , the animation was beautifully done.

The Dvd itself is ok, there are a few standard Disney DVD extras, Backstage, a game and a music video, but none of that matters as the film is amazing !

    What a Wonderful Film! I am awe-struck.

    A True Classic!

    ***** 5 well deserved Stars

Hope to see much more of this Animation in the future.

And what a fantastic moral tale. With a fantastic new princess.

And incredibly funny characters with there own little uniqueness.

The music is also brilliant, so catchy, so great, love it.

I cannot recommend this movie enough. It is not too scary for children like some

might say. Vilians are not meant to be nice, look nice etc. without vilians being

vilians your just left with a happy, merry, squeaky clean kids movie.

Vilians help children identify the bad from the good. The right from the wrong.

    and hows Good conquers Evil.

Brilliant return, keep up the good work. Much much much better than the rubbish they have

produced in recent years like (Chicken Little), (G force), (Emperor’s New Groove), & teeny bopper rubbish.

I cannot say it enough, this movie is something special!

Congratulations Disney! this is an amazing piece. I love this movie. The story is brilliant, moving, magical & marvellous.

It’s got it all, stunning animation & backgrounds, a beautiful & touching tale & fantastic catchy music.

It is DEFINATELY a classic! Well done to everybody involved, this movie is a true gem. I love it!

It’s fresh, I love the jazzy & at times country sounding music with brilliant lyrics.

The characters are so original & hilarious. I love the new orleans accent. No-one can do an adaption to a wonderful fairytale like Disney can!

I really hope there’s more fairytales & 2D stories in future. It would not be the same without Disney fairytale classics.

I’m so happy with this return to tradtional Disney, and can’t wait to see them produce more…please!

    Stunning & Truly Beautiful!
