This is a Dutch edition of the BBC TV adaptation from 1972, with the young Anthony Hopkins in the role of Pierre. I imagine the transfer is the same as the UK BBC release – it certainly looks exactly like other BBC DVDs of 70s television, Doctor Who and I, Claudius among them. In other words, the picture is okay (and 4:3) and the sound is mono. I’d say get this edition rather than the actual BBC issue because it’s less than half the price! The back of the box is in Dutch, but it’s not a big deal. The subtitles can be turned off.

What is so wonderful about this version of War and Peace is that it is the only one that gives the characters time to talk to each other. So much of War and Peace is talk–but what wonderful talk, and against such beautiful backgrounds. The characters are beautifully developed, and it is as faithful to both the plot and the spirit of the novel as it is possible for a film adaptation to be.

It is a bit dated–the hokey special effects during Pierre’s initiation to the Freemasons are a bit cringe-making. And Morag Hood is a bit annoying as the young Natasha, although, to give her credit, she grows into the role and does an admirable job as the older Natasha. Anthony Hopkins is a terrific Pierre, but my absolute favourite is Alan Dobie as Andrei. I’ve always carried a torch for Andrei, and Dobie’s serious, handsome face and his beautifully modulated voice make him the best of all possible Andreis.

A classic from the days when TV adaptations of great novels were not skimped because of tight-fisted accountants setting the budgets.Excellent value in this edition, and although I did not manage to turn off the foreign language subtitles, this did not affect our enjoyment of the production.Well done Amazon in offering this alternative to the doubly expensive version for sale in the UK.

Excellent value provided you know that you can change the language and remove the sub titles via your remote button. I used the ” display” button on my Sony.

I saw this years ago when it first came out and could never understand why it hasn’t been repeated. There are some poor reviews for this series but my wife and I sat transfixed through every episode and never wanted them to end. They passed so quickly! Despite what anyone says about Morag Hood as Natasha I thought she was perfectly cast (okay, she wasn’t quite a teenager but she had all the vitality of Natasha as written by Tolstoy). Anthony Hopkins & Alan Dobie as Bezukov and Bolkonsky were brilliant, as well as the supporting cast. I can’t speak too highly of this series, it was superb from start to finish and worth every penny!!!!
